Here Lays That Steel-Driving Man is a series of six site-specific installations, primarily in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
I have made and placed individually-cast slabs commemorating John Henry, “the steel-driving man,”- an African American folk hero of exceptional strength – by white artist John Henry’s steel sculptures. I have been turning public art work into monuments. The text for the plaques derives from various versions of the John Henry ballads (e.g. “John Henry/Here lays the Steel-Driving Man.”)
